Obtaining a Marriage License in NY

A couple who intends to marry in New York State must apply in person for a marriage license at any town or city clerk in the state. Some clerk’s offices require an appointment to be made in advance. Both partners must be present and provide the necessary documentation to obtain the license. Carefully review the marriage license before leaving the clerk’s office to ensure that no mistakes have been made.

A New York State marriage license must be obtained at least 24 hours prior to the exact time that the wedding ceremony is to take place. The license will remain valid for 60 days beginning the day after it is issued.
